India to Manufacture SJ-100 Aircraft in Partnership with Russia

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) have signed an MoU to locally manufacture the SJ-100 twin-engine aircraft in India — a move that aligns with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision and strengthens India-Russia aerospace ties.

Russia Flies Third Fully Domestic SJ-100 in Successful Maiden Flight

India’s aviation sector is taking a bold leap toward self-reliance, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) set to manufacture Russia’s SJ-100 passenger aircraft in India.

The landmark agreement, signed in Moscow on October 27, 2025, between HAL’s Prabhat Ranjan and UAC’s Oleg Bogomolov, marks a new era in India’s civil aviation manufacturing capability and deepens strategic aerospace cooperation between New Delhi and Moscow.

The SJ-100, developed by PJSC Yakovlev (part of Rostec’s United Aircraft Corporation), is a twin-engine narrow-body regional jet already in operation with over 200 aircraft flying for 16 airlines worldwide.

Under this partnership, HAL will gain exclusive rights to manufacture the SJ-100 for domestic customers, targeting India’s rapidly expanding short-haul flight market — the fastest-growing civil aviation segment of its size in the world.

HAL emphasized that the SJ-100 will be a game changer for short-haul connectivity under the UDAN scheme, bridging smaller cities and boosting regional air travel.

Over the next decade, India’s aviation sector is expected to require more than 200 jets in this category for regional routes and an additional 350 aircraft for the Indian Ocean region, serving nearby international tourist destinations.

About the SJ-100: A Symbol of Modern Russian Aviation

The new-generation SJ-100 represents Russia’s full self-reliance in civil aircraft systems, featuring:

  • Fully Domestic Systems: All components, including avionics and the PD-8 engines by United Engine Corporation (Rostec), are entirely Russian-made.
  • Advanced Engine Technology: The PD-8 engine, generating 8 tons of thrust, leverages advanced materials and expertise from the larger PD-14 program.
  • Successful Test Flights: During its maiden flight, the aircraft achieved 3,000 meters altitude and 500 km/h speed, validating its core systems.
  • Symbolic Design: The SJ-100 carries the Victory Day 80th-anniversary logo, reflecting Russia’s engineering pride and technological progress.

This collaboration echoes India’s growing ambition in aerospace manufacturing. Recently, Brazil’s Embraer Defense & Security and Mahindra Group signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement to produce the C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force — further signaling India’s ascent as a global aerospace hub.

With the SJ-100 now set for production in India, HAL’s partnership with UAC is expected to transform India’s regional aviation landscape, enhance domestic manufacturing, and fortify bilateral industrial cooperation — propelling the nation closer to its goal of a self-reliant, globally competitive aviation ecosystem.
