From Train to Plane – Lufthansa Express Rail Adds Free Local Transport

As travel demand continues to rise, Lufthansa—one of Germany’s most renowned airlines—is making journeys even more seamless for passengers.

With its latest upgrade, Lufthansa Express Rail now includes the Deutsche Bahn (DB) City-Ticket, allowing travelers to use local public transportation during their trip.

This enhancement means that Lufthansa Express Rail passengers can now hop on buses, trams, the underground, or suburban railways to and from their Express Rail station—simply by using their Lufthansa boarding pass.

The convenient upgrade applies to all Lufthansa Express Rail destinations except Siegburg and Basel, covering a total of 26 German cities. The City-Ticket is valid on the day of travel once in each direction—either for the journey to the Express Rail station or from the station to the final destination.

Lufthansa Express Rail—A Growing Success

Lufthansa Express Rail has seen a steady rise in demand over the years. In 2024 alone, around 500,000 passengers used the service for their arrival and departure at Frankfurt Airport. By integrating the City-Ticket, Lufthansa and DB are further enhancing their intermodal travel experience, lufthansa premium economy making it more efficient and cost-effective for passengers.

More Cities, More Convenience

Lufthansa Express Rail is part of a long-standing partnership between Lufthansa and Deutsche Bahn that has spanned over 20 years. With just one simple booking, travelers can secure a combined train and flight ticket, ensuring a hassle-free transfer to Frankfurt Airport from 28 cities across Germany.

This collaboration has significantly expanded Lufthansa’s reach—Express Rail now connects more than twice as many cities in Germany as the airline serves by air. Every day, Lufthansa and DB offer over 240 high-speed ICE train connections, each with a Lufthansa flight number, providing travelers with a smooth transition from rail to air.

Expanding Global Connectivity

Lufthansa’s intermodal travel solutions don’t stop at Germany. The airline’s recent expanded partnership with Air India and SWISS has added nearly 60 new codeshare routes, covering 12 Indian and 26 European cities. lufthansa a380 routes, brings the total number of codeshare routes between Lufthansa, Air India, and SWISS from 55 to nearly 100, while Austrian Airlines has introduced 26 new connections.
