EASA Begins In-Flight Evaluation of China’s Indigenous C919 Airliner

The global aviation industry is undergoing a transformative phase as China’s Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) takes bold steps with its advanced C909 aircraft.

An upgraded version of the ARJ21-700, the C909 combines state-of-the-art fuel efficiency with exceptional passenger comfort, making it a standout choice for regional routes. As China aims to expand its presence in international markets, Vietnam has emerged as a key target, with VietJet Air leading efforts to integrate this Chinese-made jet into its fleet.

VietJet Air’s Proposal: Paving the Way for COMAC C909 in Vietnam

Vietnam’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAV) recently conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the COMAC C909 after VietJet Air proposed leasing two aircraft for domestic operations. This initiative aligns with China’s broader strategy to establish COMAC as a major player in the global aviation market.

VietJet, Vietnam’s largest private airline, initially planned to launch C909 operations on January 15, leasing the aircraft from Chengdu Airlines. During the lease period, Chinese crew members would operate the jets to ensure a seamless transition into Vietnam’s airspace.

CAAV’s Ground Inspection: Assessing COMAC’s Standards

To ensure the C909 meets international safety and quality standards, a CAAV delegation visited COMAC’s production facilities in Shanghai from January 15 to January 24. The team collaborated with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to evaluate critical aspects of the aircraft, including design, safety certifications, manufacturing processes, and maintenance protocols.

In its preliminary report, the CAAV confirmed that COMAC has achieved mass production of the C909, which holds both Type Certification (TC) and Production Certification from China’s aviation regulator.

The C909 is gaining momentum worldwide. As of January 7, 2025, COMAC has delivered 160 C909 aircraft to 12 airlines, including major Chinese carriers like China Southern Airlines, Air China, and China Eastern Airlines.

Regulatory Challenges: COMAC’s Hurdles in Vietnam

Despite its potential, the COMAC C909 faces significant regulatory obstacles in Vietnam. Current aviation laws mandate that aircraft must be certified by either the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Since the C909 lacks these certifications, its approval would require a regulatory amendment. To address this, the CAAV has proposed a rule change to allow the import of Chinese-certified aircraft starting April 30. However, the proposal is still pending final approval from Vietnam’s top leadership.

Vietnam’s Diplomatic Balancing Act: China vs. the U.S.

Vietnam’s decision on the C909 is further complicated by its need to balance economic ties with both China and the United States. While China is a key partner in transportation and defense, the U.S. remains Vietnam’s largest trade partner. In a strategic move to address trade imbalances, Vietnam recently committed to purchasing Boeing 737 MAX jets, underscoring the delicate diplomatic balance the country must maintain.

China’s aviation advancements include the ARJ21 (now rebranded as the C909), a 100-seat regional jet for shorter routes, and the C919, a 180-seat narrowbody jet designed to compete with the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320. Both models have seen growing demand in the domestic market.

At China’s premier air show in Zhuhai, COMAC announced that Air China will be the launch customer for the C929 widebody jet, further solidifying its position in the global aviation industry.
