Air India Drops This U.S. Route from Its Fleet as Aircraft Undergo Retrofit Upgrades
In a surprising development for aviation enthusiasts and international travelers, Air India has quietly altered its North American route strategy.
The airline’s planned direct connection between Dallas/Fort Worth and Delhi has been shelved, raising questions about its future U.S. expansion.
Dallas-Delhi Route Initially Approved
Air India, one of India’s leading carriers, had initially proposed a U.S. route connecting Dallas/Fort Worth to Delhi. India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) approved the service in October 2024.
While the airline could have started operations as early as December 1, 2024, aviation experts expected the launch sometime in 2025. The route seemed likely after Dallas Fort Worth International Airport appeared in Air India’s DGCA-approved schedule, though no official confirmation or start date was ever announced.
Dallas Dropped from 2025 Schedule
According to the Dallas Business Journal, Dallas has now disappeared from Air India’s U.S. destinations and its 2025 schedule. Other major U.S. airports, including New York-JFK and Chicago O’Hare, remain on the airline’s list. Presently, Air India operates nonstop flights to New York-JFK, Newark, Chicago O’Hare, San Francisco, Toronto, and Vancouver. The airline recently ended flights to Washington Dulles due to an aircraft retrofit program.
Impact of Aircraft Retrofit Program
The decision to omit Dallas appears linked to Air India’s ongoing aircraft upgrade initiative, which temporarily grounds long-haul planes. During this period, the airline is prioritizing its existing routes while completing critical retrofits. Local North Texas leaders and the Indian community, who had anticipated the new link for improved connectivity, have expressed disappointment.
Future Plans for U.S. Expansion
Analysts suggest that Air India plans to expand its international network after completing the retrofit program. New U.S. destinations could be added by late 2025 or 2026, strengthening the airline’s presence in North America.
As recently, Air India, has taken another step forward in strengthening its global connectivity. In a move that expands travel options for passengers and deepens its international presence, the airline has signed a codeshare agreement with Air Astana, the national carrier of Kazakhstan.
This new partnership promises easier, faster, and more seamless connections between India and Central Asia, while also giving travelers access to a wider network with just a single booking.
