Air India Apologizes as Cockroaches Found on B777 Mumbai–San Francisco Flight
Air India passengers were left horrified after cockroaches were discovered mid-flight, prompting emergency cleaning and fresh scrutiny of the airline’s hygiene standards.
In a shocking incident that has once again raised serious questions about airline hygiene, passengers aboard Air India’s long-haul flight AI180 from San Francisco to Mumbai were startled to find cockroaches crawling inside the aircraft cabin.
The disturbing discovery occurred early Monday morning, during the first leg of the journey, leaving travelers both stunned and disgusted.
Cockroaches Discovered Mid-Flight
The Boeing 777, which was operating via Kolkata for a scheduled fuel stop, reportedly became the scene of discomfort when two passengers noticed cockroaches in their seating area. Air India confirmed that the insects were spotted before the flight reached Kolkata and described them as “a few small cockroaches.”
Cabin crew acted promptly by relocating the affected passengers to different seats within the same cabin to ensure their comfort.
Emergency Cleaning During Fuel Stop
Upon landing in Kolkata, Air India’s ground crew immediately initiated a deep cleaning process to sanitize the aircraft. The airline stated that this cleaning was part of the standard operational response to such hygiene issues and ensured that the flight departed on time for its final leg to Mumbai.
“During the flight’s scheduled fuel stop in Kolkata, our ground crew promptly conducted a deep cleaning process to address the issue,” the airline said in an official statement.
Airline Responds With Apology
A spokesperson for Air India issued an apology to the passengers, stating that despite regular fumigation and pest control protocols, insects can sometimes enter aircraft during ground handling and servicing. The airline emphasized its commitment to maintaining hygiene and assured that further investigations would be carried out to determine the source of the infestation.
Serious Concerns Over Hygiene Standards
The incident has sparked widespread concern over Air India’s hygiene and quality control standards, especially considering the airline’s recent push to improve customer experience under the Tata Group’s ownership.
Industry experts caution that such incidents can seriously damage an airline’s reputation. Negative passenger experiences like this can lead to:
- Declining customer trust
- Loss of bookings
- Potential legal claims
- Competitive disadvantage
Competitors May Capitalize
Analysts also point out that rival airlines may seize this opportunity to position themselves as safer and more reliable options. In a competitive aviation market, even a single hygiene-related issue can tilt customer loyalty towards carriers perceived to offer cleaner and better-maintained aircraft.
Air India Promises Further Action
Following public backlash, Air India has assured a full probe into the incident and stated that corrective measures will be reinforced across its fleet to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
While the airline may have acted quickly in this case, the cockroach scare on AI180 has undoubtedly delivered a blow to its image—leaving passengers rattled, and its commitment to cleanliness under intense scrutiny.
