Riyadh Air Faces Major Setback as Launch is Delayed to Late 2025
Riyadh Air’s launch has been delayed to late 2025 due to aircraft delivery setbacks.
Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia’s ambitious new flag carrier, has announced a revised timeline for its highly anticipated launch.
Originally slated for mid-2025, the airline now plans to begin operations in late 2025 due to global delays in aircraft deliveries. These delays reflect challenges faced by airlines worldwide.
Initial Plans and Adjustments
Riyadh Air initially aimed to take flight with three boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, including a leased 787-9 from Oman Air to act as a “technical spare.” This leased aircraft, painted in Riyadh Air’s distinctive pearl livery, was intended to supplement two brand-new Dreamliners for the airline’s debut.
However, supply chain disruptions have altered the delivery schedule. The airline now expects to receive just four Dreamliners in 2025—half the original forecast. The first delivery is projected for no earlier than July, prompting Riyadh Air to delay its operational launch until later in the year.
Preparing for Takeoff
Recently, Riyadh Air showcased its readiness by preparing to receive its first leased Boeing b787 at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
Unlike the rest of its future fleet of 72 Dreamliners, this leased aircraft serves a unique dual purpose: it will act as both a technical spare and a training platform, ensuring the airline is fully equipped for its operational debut.
Boeing’s Role and Challenges
Boeing, the manufacturer behind Riyadh Air‘s fleet, is actively working with the airline to ensure smooth deliveries and operational readiness. While collaborating with Riyadh Air, boeing 787-9 dreamliner is also addressing separate regulatory challenges.
The manufacturer is seeking temporary exemptions for the stall-management yaw damper (SMYD) system on its 737 Max 7 and Max 10 aircraft due to updated airworthiness classification standards.
Vision for the Future
Despite the delays, Riyadh Air remains optimistic about its future. The airline is poised to play a pivotal role in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, aiming to position itself as a major competitor in global aviation.
With its striking branding, state-of-the-art fleet, and commitment to innovation, Riyadh Air is set to redefine travel experiences while supporting the nation’s broader economic and tourism goals.
