IndiGo, India’s largest low-cost carrier, is expanding its reach into the long-haul aviation market with the arrival of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on a wet lease agreement.

This strategic move marks a significant milestone in the airline’s ambitious international expansion, positioning IndiGo to compete with major players like Air India, British Airways, and other global carriers.

By introducing the Dreamliner, the indigo flights aims to cater to the increasing demand for travel between India and prominent global destinations such as London and Paris.

Expanding International Reach with the Dreamliner

Known for its dominance in India’s domestic market, IndiGo is now focused on broadening its international network, with an emphasis on Europe.

The indigo plane plans to launch key long-haul routes, particularly to London and Paris, and the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will play a crucial role in these plans. This significant step marks IndiGo’s entry into long-haul air travel, bringing them closer to their goal of becoming a global aviation player.

Currently operating an all-narrow-body fleet, indigo share price has relied on wet-leasing wide-body aircraft for its international routes. The airline has previously leased Boeing 777-300ERs from Turkish Airlines for flights between Mumbai, Delhi, and Istanbul. With the addition of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, IndiGo is set to further expand its international offerings.

Strategic Wet Lease Agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways

IndiGo’s Dreamliners come through a wet lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways, a Norwegian carrier that has announced plans to lease out six of its Boeing 787-9s. Although neither party has publicly confirmed the deal, reports suggest IndiGo is in negotiations to secure the aircraft.

This wet lease arrangement provides indigo airlines with a practical solution to operate long-haul flights quickly. It includes the aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance services, allowing the airline to expand internationally without waiting for the delivery of its own Airbus A350s, scheduled to join the fleet in 2027.

This partnership will allow indigo.to launch long-haul services much sooner than expected, with potential new routes to London and Paris within the next few months. With all six Dreamliners operational by 2025, indigo will be better equipped to serve high-demand international routes while staying true to its low-cost model.

While the Boeing 787-9s mark the beginning of IndiGo’s international ambitions, the airline is already planning for further fleet growth. In 2025, IndiGo will welcome its Airbus A321XLR jets, followed by the arrival of Airbus A350s in 2027.

Until then, the Dreamliners will serve as an interim solution, helping the airline build its global presence. IndiGo’s strategic wet lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways is part of a broader plan to secure a competitive edge in the global aviation market while navigating the challenges of supply chain delays and industry growth.
