Reliance and US Firm Launch Defence MRO Hub as Govt Aims for 35 Million Jobs Nationwide

In a bold stride towards strengthening India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing and services, Reliance Infrastructure has set its sights on revolutionizing the country’s military aviation ecosystem.

With India’s defence needs expanding rapidly, and the government placing increasing emphasis on domestic capability, Reliance is seizing the moment by launching a pioneering Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub at the Mihan Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Nagpur.

This project, in collaboration with US-based Coastal Mechanics Inc. could reshape the landscape of India’s defence servicing industry—unlocking a ₹20,000-crore market over the next decade.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) operates a diverse range of platforms—many of which are decades old—and maintaining these systems requires highly specialized repair capabilities. The new MRO center is expected to support platforms such as the British-origin Jaguar strike aircraft, Russian-made MiG-29 fighters, legacy L-70 anti-aircraft guns, and even American Apache attack helicopters.

Facility Details and Economic Impact
Set within the sprawling 180-acre land bank held by Reliance in the Mihan-SEZ, the facility will be the first defence-focused MRO in Nagpur and the third in the entire region. The project will require an initial investment of ₹500 crore and is expected to generate approximately 200 skilled jobs at the outset, with ample scope for future employment growth as operations expand.

This facility will also work in synergy with Reliance’s existing aerospace venture—Dassault Reliance Aerospace Ltd (DRAL)—which is jointly producing Falcon 2000 business jets in partnership with French aerospace leader Dassault Aviation.

The first Made-in-India Falcon jet is slated to take its maiden flight by 2028 from the same Nagpur campus, positioning the city as a rising hub for both civil and military aviation manufacturing.
