PAF Mirage 5 ROSE III Crashes After Takeoff During Training in Sargodha

A sudden scare gripped the skies over Sargodha on Tuesday when a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) fighter jet went down during a routine training mission.

The incident involved a Mirage 5 ROSE III — one of PAF’s upgraded workhorses — and fortunately, the pilot managed to eject in time, escaping without injury.

According to reports, the aircraft belonged to No. 27 “Zarrar” Squadron of the 32nd Tactical Attack Wing. Initial accounts suggest the fighter crashed shortly after takeoff, though the exact cause is still under investigation by PAF authorities.

The Mirage 5 ROSE III – A Modernized Classic

The Mirage 5 has long been a backbone of the PAF, but the ROSE (Retrofit of Strike Element) program breathed new life into the aging fleet. Under this modernization initiative, the Mirage 5 ROSE III was equipped with:

  • Advanced avionics and navigation systems for all-weather capability.
  • Modern strike and targeting equipment to enhance precision in attack missions.
  • Improved cockpit displays and radar systems, extending its operational relevance.
  • Night attack and reconnaissance features, turning it into a versatile multirole platform.

Though rooted in a French design from the 1960s, the ROSE upgrades gave these jets a second life, allowing them to perform crucial roles in Pakistan’s air defense and offensive operations.

An Irreplaceable Role in PAF

Despite being an older platform, the Mirage 5 ROSE III continues to play a vital part in the PAF’s tactical strike and reconnaissance missions. Its ability to deliver precision strikes while operating in challenging environments makes it a key component of Pakistan’s air strategy.

Tuesday’s crash, while a setback, highlights the risks faced by fighter pilots even during routine flights. Fortunately, the safe ejection of the pilot ensured that no lives were lost.

As investigations proceed, the PAF will be reviewing technical and operational factors behind the incident.

But one thing remains clear — the Mirage 5 ROSE III, with its unique blend of legacy design and modern upgrades, continues to stand as both a symbol of resilience and a reminder of the challenges of keeping aging fleets in active service.
