Meet ‘Gaurav’—India’s Long-Range Bomb That Strikes Without Crossing Enemy Lines
India’s DRDO achieves a major milestone by testing the ‘Gaurav’ glide bomb, boosting IAF’s precision strike power from safe stand-off ranges.
India has taken a giant leap in strengthening its aerial firepower with the successful test of the indigenously developed ‘Gaurav’ long-range glide bomb (LRGB).
Between April 8-10, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted critical trials, releasing the 1,000 kg precision-guided munition from a Su-30 MKI fighter jet. The tests, conducted over an island-based target, validated the bomb’s accuracy, range, and versatility.
Key Features of the ‘Gaurav’ Glide Bomb
- 100 km Strike Range: Capable of hitting targets from a stand-off distance, keeping fighter jets safe from enemy air defenses.
- Hybrid Guidance System: Uses INS (Inertial Navigation System) + GPS for pinpoint accuracy.
- Multiple Warhead Configurations: Tested for different combat scenarios, enhancing mission flexibility.
- Indigenous Development: Designed by DRDO labs (RCI, ARDE, ITR) with support from private industry partners like Adani Defence & Bharat Forge.
Why This Test Matters for India’s Defense
- Enhanced Precision Strikes – The ‘Gaurav’ bomb allows the Indian Air Force (IAF) to destroy high-value targets with minimal risk to pilots.
- Reduced Dependence on Imports – A major step toward self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in defense technology.
- Strategic Edge Against Adversaries – Strengthens India’s offensive capabilities amid rising regional tensions.
Collaboration Between DRDO & Private Sector
The project highlights successful public-private partnership, with key contributions from:
- Adani Defence Systems & Technologies
- Bharat Forge
- MSMEs (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises)
- Certification by CEMILAC & DGAQA
Government & DRDO’s Response
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the achievement, stating that the ‘Gaurav’ bomb will boost India’s combat readiness.
- DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat commended scientists and industry partners for their role in this milestone.
The Future of India’s Aerial Strike Capabilities
With the successful test of the ‘Gaurav’ glide bomb, India joins an elite group of nations with advanced long-range precision strike systems. This development not only enhances the IAF’s operational flexibility but also reinforces India’s position as a growing defense technology powerhouse.
