Malaysia Airlines Grounds Recently Delivered A330neo After Operational Snags

Like Boeing, Airbus now faces scrutiny over manufacturing oversight, as Malaysia Airlines grounds its first Airbus A330-900neo after just two round-trip flights.

The grounding stems from multiple technical defects that surfaced during the aircraft’s maiden passenger flight to Melbourne on December 19, 2024, raising questions about the quality of the newly delivered jet.

The aircraft, registered as 9M-MNG, was delivered to Malaysia Airlines from Airbus’ factory in Toulouse on November 29, 2024, as the first of 20 A330neo planes ordered to modernize the carrier’s fleet.

However, operational issues were reported on its very first flight, MH149 from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne, with engine and hydraulic complications. Despite completing a second round trip to Melbourne the following day, recurring technical issues led to its grounding upon return to Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia Airlines has called on Airbus and Rolls-Royce, the manufacturer of the plane’s Trent 7000 engines, to investigate and resolve these problems. “We need Airbus and Rolls-Royce to investigate the root cause of these issues on the brand-new aircraft,” said Malaysia Airlines CEO Izham Ismail in a statement to the New Straits Times.

The airline initially grounded the aircraft for 48 hours to allow its engineers, along with specialists from Airbus and Rolls-Royce, to conduct detailed inspections. However, the issues persist, and as of December 23, 2024, the aircraft remains grounded, with its scheduled rotation to Melbourne showing as canceled.

The A330neo is known for its fuel efficiency and advanced features, including a two-class cabin layout with 28 business-class seats equipped with private suite doors and 269 economy seats, 24 of which offer extra legroom.

Passengers are treated to a modern entertainment system with real-time flight tracking and a dedicated Kids Mode interface. Despite these high-end features, the grounding underscores serious concerns about Airbus’ quality control and the reliability of the Rolls-Royce engines.
