India has been working on the kaveri engine update for over 30 years, a project led by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE).

After facing many challenges, the engine has now been cleared for inflight testing. It marking a major milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in advanced aerospace technology.

This achievement brings India closer to having its own advanced jet engine, a dream that has been years in the making.

Kaveri engine Thrust

The Kaveri engine has gone through extensive testing, including ground tests and simulations, to ensure its performance.

Currently, kaveri engine afterburner can generate a dry thrust of around 49-51 kN, which is suitable for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

However, with an afterburner, the kaveri engine thrust could increase to 73-75 kN, making it capable of powering fighter jets. This progress reflects the hard work of the DRDO and GTRE teams. Who have worked tirelessly to advance India’s aerospace capabilities.

In 2018, Safran conducted an audit and confirmed that the Kaveri engine had reached a maturity level that made it suitable for aircraft integration.

The next phase is to mount the engine onto a flying test bed (FTB). Where it will undergo real-world inflight tests to evaluate its performance and reliability. These tests will help ensure that the engine meets the necessary standards for operational use.

Kaveri Engine program Started in 1980’s

The kaveri engine program has had a long and challenging journey since it started in the late 1980s. Despite facing technical hurdles and delays, the project has come a long way.

The engine has undergone high-altitude simulations in Russia and extensive ground trials in India. Which have shown that it can perform reliably under various conditions. These successes bring it closer to being used in India’s advanced fighter jets.

India is also seeking international collaboration to further enhance its aerospace capabilities. South Korea has expressed interest in partnering with India to develop a new engine for the KF-21 fighter jet. which shares similar thrust requirements with the gtre kaveri.

A joint partnership could help both nations address the challenges of developing high-performance jet engines.

With its impressive durability in tough conditions, the indian kaveri engine has the potential to outperform some competitors.

The GTRE is also working on a new generation of afterburners that could boost the engine’s thrust by an additional 30 kN, making it a strong candidate for the next batch of Tejas Mk1A fighters. The Kaveri engine is moving closer to becoming a key player in India’s future fighter jet fleet.
