USAF Reopens Bidding for Advanced Ejection Seats

The U.S. Air Force is making a significant change to its Next-Generation Ejection Seat (NGES) program by opening up competition for some of its aircraft platforms.

This decision is part of an effort to modernize its fleet, improve safety, and encourage innovation by allowing more industry players to participate. The first step in this revised strategy is focused on the F-16, with plans to potentially extend the competition to other platforms like the F-22 and B-1 in the future.

This update follows a comprehensive review of industry feedback gathered in August 2024 through a Sources Sought notice. The notice provided an opportunity for potential vendors to share valuable technical insights, which helped the Air Force better understand the capabilities available in the market.

Armed with this new data, the Air Force has decided to move forward with a fresh acquisition strategy that prioritizes flexibility and competition.

Previously, in 2020, the Air Force awarded a sole-source contract to Collins Aerospace to develop and field the NGES for the F-15. This decision was based on earlier market research and the maturity of Collins’ technology at the time.

However, with updated market research and evolving operational needs, the Air Force now sees an opportunity to enhance its approach by inviting more companies to compete for the F-16 NGES contract.

While the focus of this competition is currently on the F-16, the Air Force has made it clear that the outcomes could shape decisions for other platforms. However, the partnership with Collins Aerospace remains critical for the F-15 NGES program, ensuring continuity and on-time delivery for existing projects.
