India’s aerospace and defense sector is undergoing a rapid transformation, with self-reliance and modernization at its core.

According to the Sources, as part of this shift, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to expand its transport fleet by procuring 50 additional Airbus C-295M aircraft, bringing the total order to 106 units.

This move will gradually replace the IAF’s aging fleet of Soviet-origin An-32 transport aircraft, which have been the backbone of medium-lift operations for decades.

Why the C-295M?

The Airbus C-295M has proven to be a modern, versatile, and cost-effective platform ideally suited for India’s operational needs. Designed for tactical airlift missions, the aircraft can carry 5–10 tons of cargo or up to 71 troops.

More importantly, it can operate from short and unprepared airstrips, a crucial capability for missions in remote border areas, particularly along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and Line of Control (LoC).

Key Features of the C-295M

  • Payload Capacity: 5–10 tons; troop capacity up to 71 soldiers.
  • Engines: Two fuel-efficient Pratt & Whitney PW127G turboprops.
  • Range: Approximately 5,000 km, enabling long-range transport and relief missions.

These features make the C-295M a reliable successor to the An-32, ensuring better performance, reduced maintenance, and improved operational readiness.

The Bigger Picture: Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) Program

While the C-295M addresses the medium-lift requirement, the IAF is also focused on a much larger challenge — replacing its Il-76 strategic transport fleet. The Il-76, in service since the 1980s, can carry up to 60 tons of cargo, including tanks and heavy equipment. However, with aging airframes and rising operational costs, a modern replacement is essential.

To meet this need, the IAF is redefining its Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) program, which aims to induct a new generation of aircraft in the 40-ton payload class. Reports suggest that a separate tender for 70–80 aircraft may be issued soon, with contenders likely to include:

  • Airbus A400M Atlas – Payload up to 37 tons.
  • Lockheed Martin C-130J-30 Super Hercules – Payload 20–22 tons, with potential upgrades.
  • Embraer C-390 Millennium – Payload around 26 tons.

This new acquisition drive will likely follow the ‘Make in India’ model, encouraging local production and technology transfer, similar to the C-295M deal with Tata Advanced Systems in India.
