By early 2025, it delivered the first two modules to DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) and is completing the remaining six. This engine powers unmanned combat aerial vehicles like the DRDO Ghatak and serves as a foundation for higher-thrust variants.
- 5th-Generation Jet Engine Readiness: Godrej has announced its capability to manufacture engines for 5th-generation fighters, leveraging KDE expertise in handling titanium alloys, high-temperature brazing, and precision welding. It is positioning itself as a key partner for the AMCA program, which requires a 110-120 kN engine, and expressed interest in collaborating with GTRE at Aero India 2025.
- 90 kN Engine Development: Godrej is supporting GTRE in upgrading the KDE core to a 90 kN class engine for the Tejas Mk2, using techniques like 3D printing and single-crystal blade casting. This “spiral development” approach builds incrementally toward AMCA needs.
- Broader Aerospace Role: Godrej manufactures liquid propulsion systems for ISRO (e.g., Vikas engine components for Chandrayaan-3) and BrahMos missile parts, honing skills transferable to jet engines. It plans to invest ₹500 crore in a new Mumbai-area facility to scale production.
These efforts mark a milestone in India’s jet engine program, which faced setbacks with the original Kaveri in the 2010s but is now advancing through public-private partnerships. While full self-reliance may take years, Godrej’s role accelerates progress toward operational indigenous engines by 2030.
