Boeing Ends Production Iconic 777-300ER Widebody Jet

Now, that incredible journey has officially come to an end. Boeing has closed the production line of this iconic jet, marking the conclusion of one of the most successful widebody aircraft programs in aviation history.
A Historic Chapter Closes
According to Boeing’s 2024 delivery records, the company handed over just one final 777-300ER this year. That delivery quietly closed the book on a legendary aircraft that has shaped commercial aviation since its debut in 2004.

The Aircraft That Changed the Game
When the 777-300ER entered service two decades ago, it revolutionized long-haul air travel. With a remarkable range of 7,370 nautical miles, powered by the mighty General Electric GE90 engines, it delivered what airlines had long been waiting for: a reliable, fuel-efficient, twin-engine aircraft that could carry nearly 400 passengers across oceans with ease.
It quickly became the world’s best-selling widebody aircraft. Carriers from every corner of the globe added it to their fleets, cementing Boeing’s reputation for engineering innovation and market foresight. Its balance of performance, passenger comfort, and operational efficiency made it the backbone of international routes for years.
The Shift Toward the 777X
Despite Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stephanie Pope’s announcement in December about resuming production across several aircraft lines following a machinists’ strike, the 777-300ER will no longer roll off the assembly line.
The future now belongs to the 777X, Boeing’s next-generation widebody that carries forward the 777 legacy with new technology, improved aerodynamics, and advanced passenger comfort features.
Certification Challenges Ahead
Even as Boeing celebrates the legacy of the 777-300ER, the company faces ongoing regulatory hurdles. It has requested relief through October 2028 to achieve full compliance and retrofit delivered aircraft. These certification delays mirror challenges with the 737 Max 7 and Max 10 variants.
A key part of this process involves safety systems. While all 737 Max aircraft use similar Stall Management Yaw Damper (SMYD) systems, the Max 10 introduces an Enhanced Angle of Attack (EAOA) feature.
This improvement, designed in the aftermath of earlier Max accidents, aims to boost error detection in angle-of-attack data across the fleet. Boeing argues that without regulatory exemptions, its ability to roll out these safety upgrades could be slowed—leaving uncertainty around FAA decisions and timelines.
A Legacy That Will Endure
With the last 777-300ER now delivered, the aircraft takes its place in history as one of Boeing’s greatest successes. For airlines, crews, and millions of passengers who have flown aboard it, the jet represents more than just engineering excellence—it represents reliability, progress, and the thrill of global connection.
