American man allegedly carried live albino alligator in suitcase at German airport: report

According to a report by the German newspaper, the three-foot-long alligator was found at the Munich Airport in late September using one of the airport’s security checkpoint X-ray machines. When they opened the suitcase, customs officials reportedly discovered an alligator wrapped in cling film.

International news outlets have shared an image of the purported albino alligator and an alleged X-ray image of the reptile on social media. According to the images, an alligator has been wrapped in plastic cling wrap and duct tape and fixed in a circular position.

The health of the rare reptile was not good at the time, but after receiving care from animal keepers, the alligator is now in better condition, the airport’s customs office reportedly declared on October 13th.

The man who attempted to bring the alligator through Munich Airport was en route to Singapore. Authorities say he is 42 years old but have not released his name. According to the newspaper’s report, the man had his cell phone seized and was mandated to make a five-digit security deposit.

The man is believed to have violated Germany’s Species Protection and Animal Welfare Act, and legal action and a criminal investigation are ongoing. However, German authorities have not confirmed whether the man’s unusual and risky method of transporting the alligator was an attempt at smuggling.
