American Airlines Will Cut Some New York Flights this Summer

American is cutting the number of flights it operates between Newark Liberty International Airport and Chicago as well as between LaGuardia Airport and Dallas, Miami, Kansas City, and St. Louis.

While airlines struggle to keep up with the growing demand for flights following the outbreak, air travellers may have to endure a challenging summer. While consumers prepare for their summer vacations as New York City strives to recover from the pandemic, the airline stated, “It is regrettable to reduce flights for customers.”

According to the FAA, this will allow airlines to “decrease operations during the busy summer travel period, which is anticipated to be worsened by the effects of staffing shortages for air traffic controllers.” If airlines do not use their slots at least 80% of the time at busy airports, they risk losing their slots.

The FAA anticipates airlines to operate more substantial aircraft in order to reduce effects on passengers. According to industry trade group Airlines for America, airlines have already reduced nearly 10% of their scheduled flights this spring to address performance difficulties.
