In a development that has drawn attention both domestically and internationally, Bulgaria’s ambitious modernization of its air force has hit a temporary snag.

The country’s first F-16 Block 70 fighter jet, a cornerstone of its efforts to upgrade its defense capabilities, has been grounded after a system deviation was identified during the crucial acceptance phase. Although the discovery has not derailed the program, it underscores the meticulous process of integrating advanced military hardware.

System Deviation Detected After Landing

The F-16 Block 70 aircraft, which recently landed in Bulgaria, was found to have a system deviation during the ongoing acceptance process, Air Force Commander Major General Nikolay Rusev confirmed this week.

While the exact nature of the deviation has not been publicly disclosed, it remains unclear whether the issue emerged mid-flight or after the jet touched down on Bulgarian soil.

Despite this technical hiccup, Rusev was quick to reassure the public and defense observers that the presence of a deviation does not imply the aircraft is defective. “Such findings are part of the normal and rigorous testing process,” he stated, adding that the grounding is a precautionary measure.

Thorough Two-Stage Acceptance Process

The acceptance process for the aircraft is extensive and methodical, involving two primary stages: technical inspection and flight testing. These steps are essential to ensure that the aircraft meets all operational standards before entering active service.

As part of the flight test phase, at least two flights must be conducted with a Bulgarian pilot at the controls. Only after these flights confirm the aircraft’s operational readiness will the fighter be officially integrated into the Bulgarian Air Force’s fleet.

The f16 block 70 is an advanced variant of the widely used f16 Fighting Falcon, featuring upgraded avionics, a powerful engine, and enhanced weapons capabilities. It includes a modern electronic warfare system, improved radar, and a sophisticated central computer.

Modernization on Track Despite Setback

Bulgaria has ordered a total of 16 F-16 Block 70 fighter jets, spread across two contracts. The first batch includes eight aircraft, with seven more expected to arrive in several installments by the end of 2025.
