Sukhoi Superjet 100 Suffers Fatal Crash during the Test Flight

A Russian passenger plane, the Sukhoi Superjet 100, crashed near Moscow, resulting in the tragic loss of all three crew members on board, as confirmed by the country’s emergencies ministry.

The aircraft, which had no passengers at the time, went down in a forested area, with initial reports suggesting it was on a test flight following repair works.

Videos circulating on social media captured a plume of smoke rising from the crash site and showed emergency response teams, including ambulances, firefighters, and a helicopter, swiftly converging on the scene.

According to data from FlightRadar24, the aircraft was airborne for about 60 minutes and made three circular landing attempts before it ultimately crashed. The crew had signaled for help prior to the crash.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100, designed to carry around 100 passengers, has faced operational challenges, particularly due to a shortage of spare parts resulting from Western sanctions. This incident adds to the jet’s troubled history, which includes several previous crashes.

The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency confirmed the crash occurred at approximately 3 pm on Friday and announced that an investigation would be conducted in collaboration with the Interstate Aviation Committee, a body responsible for investigating air crashes within the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Rescuers arrived at the crash site by Friday evening, working to clear debris, as reported by state-aligned news agency Interfax. Alexander Grechishchev, mayor of Kolomna, the nearest large city to the crash site, reassured residents that there was no immediate threat to the surrounding populated areas.

Meanwhile, a criminal investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances leading to the crash, focusing on potential violations of aviation safety protocols, according to a representative from law enforcement agency RIA Novosti.
