Will the TEJAS MK-2 Fighter Jet GE-414 Engine Deal See a Price Increase?

India’s plans to develop and produce the LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) Mark 2 may face increased costs, according to sources.

The price hike is mainly due to rising costs for the GE-414 engines, which are being supplied by General Electric (GE) for the LCA Mark 2 jets. These price increases are tied to delays in engine deliveries and other supply chain issues, potentially raising the overall cost of the project.

The LCA Mark 2 project is crucial for India’s goal of building its own modern fighter aircraft. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is negotiating with GE for the supply of the GE-414 engines, but these negotiations are facing setbacks, pushing the cost higher.

Meanwhile, the LCA Mark 1A, which uses a different engine, the GE-F404, has also been delayed. This delay was initially expected to be resolved by March 31, 2024, but has now extended further due to engine supply issues, causing operational readiness concerns for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

India plans to purchase around 200 LCA Mark 1A jets, 200 LCA Mark 2 jets, and additional Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) over the next 15 years. These jets are critical to India’s efforts to modernize its air force and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.

However, delays in engine supplies and rising costs are threatening to delay this process and impact the budget for these aircraft.

The GE-414 engines are essential for the LCA Mark 2, which is India’s next-generation fighter jet. The ongoing delays and cost increases are complicating India’s goal of developing a self-sufficient defence system.

To address these issues, the Defence Ministry has formed a committee under the Defence Secretary to evaluate the situation and recommend solutions to ensure the timely development of the fighter jets.

The committee’s focus will be on three key projects: LCA Mark 1A, LCA Mark 2, and AMCA. These projects are vital for India’s air force modernization and self-reliance in defence. The government is committed to overcoming the challenges, but with increasing costs and supply chain delays, finding solutions to keep these projects on track will be essential.
