FAA Probes Near-Collision: A330 and B737 Just 423 Feet Apart near Phoenix Sky

The FAA is investigating an incident where two passenger jets carrying hundreds of passengers nearly collided near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Saturday.

Both planes were cleared to land at 11 a.m. local time when Delta Flight 1070, an Airbus A330 carrying 245 passengers from Detroit, received a collision warning.

The Delta pilot quickly responded, avoiding a potential disaster.

Both planes 425 feet apart vertically.

United Flight 1724, arriving from San Francisco, also received a collision warning during its landing attempt.

Preliminary data from Flightradar24 shows the two planes were just 425 feet apart vertically and less than a quarter of a mile apart horizontally within seconds.

Air traffic control promptly issued corrective instructions to both flight crews, ensuring both planes landed safely.

Cockpit recordings captured the moment the collision alert sounded, with the command “Descend, descend” heard in the background.

The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on flight plans and operations to determine how both planes were cleared to land simultaneously, raising serious concerns about air traffic control procedures.
