British Airways flight attendant makes £50,000 mistake on first day at work

An embarrassing mistake committed by a new flight attendant on British Airways during his first day of work which cost the airline almost £50,000.

The unnamed member of the cabin crew unintentionally unlocked an emergency door, resulting in the deployment of the inflatable slide. The employee made the error shortly after pushback at Heathrow on Friday, January 13, while working on flight BA75 to Lagos, the airline revealed.

The Boeing 777’s emergency slide inflated and sprung from the side of the aircraft as a result of the open door, leading emergency service teams to surround the plane under the assumption that it was about to be evacuated. When the airline’s staff finally managed to get the plane back in flying condition, passengers were delayed for a further four hours.

M Zulqarnain B, an aviation data analyst, posted images of the inflatable slide, with a fire engine and a police car clearly visible on the tarmac below. The slide was supposed to be lifted from the airport tarmac by engineers, however it was deemed that the aircraft needed a replacement slide.

According to The Sun News, the error may have cost British Airways more than £50,000 given the replacement slide, the new aircraft, and the missing the flight’s original take-off slot.

“We’ve apologised to customers for the difficulty caused, have given them refreshment vouchers, and have scheduled a replacement aircraft so that they can continue their travel as planned,” the airline stated.
