Will U.S. Approve F-35 Sale to Saudi Arabia Despite Israel’s Military Edge?

Saudi Arabia is undergoing a massive transformation—and at the heart of it is one of the most ambitious military modernization programs in the Middle East. As part of its Vision 2030 initiative, the Kingdom is working to diversify its economy and significantly strengthen its national defense.

A key piece of this strategy is the U.S.-Saudi arms deal, worth a staggering $142 billion, signed between 2013 and 2025. Described by the White House as the largest defense cooperation agreement in U.S. history, it includes everything from advanced weapons systems to military support services.

One of the most talked-about topics in this deal? The F-35 fighter jet.

Saudi Arabia has long shown interest in acquiring the F-35, one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world. But so far, the U.S. has not approved the sale. Why?

The answer lies in America’s longstanding security agreement with Israel. Under a 10-year defense deal, the U.S. is committed to maintaining Israel’s qualitative military edge in the region. Israel already operates the F-35 and even contributes advanced technology to the aircraft, including integrated counter-defense systems. Because of this close collaboration, the U.S. has been cautious about offering the same capability to other regional powers—especially one as influential as Saudi Arabia.

But the Kingdom isn’t waiting around.

Saudi Arabia is actively expanding its military capabilities beyond the F-35. It’s investing in air and missile defense systems, naval and maritime technology, missile development, and even space defense programs—all with support from the United States. The country is also working to diversify its defense suppliers.

One notable move? Saudi Arabia is reportedly in talks to buy up to 100 fifth-generation fighter jets from Turkey. Although the timeline isn’t confirmed, this deal would mark a major leap forward in the Kingdom’s defense ambitions.

With these developments, Saudi Arabia is fast becoming one of the most powerful military forces in the Middle East—second only to Israel, which remains the region’s leader in defense technology.

So, what does all of this mean?

It means Saudi Arabia is preparing to take on a much larger role in regional security. It’s building one of the most advanced and diversified militaries in the Middle East, reshaping the balance of power.
