Why do flights from India to the USA not travel via the north pole?

Man sets record for longest birthday by 46 Hours flying across time zones.

Typically, flights from India to the USA do not fly over the North Pole because the Atlantic Ocean is the quickest and most direct route between the two nations. The curvature of the Earth and the location of the two countries on the globe make it more practical to fly over the Atlantic rather than over the North Pole.

While flying over the North Pole may appear to be a more direct route, doing so necessitates flying over a sizable portion of uninhabited, frequently harsh terrain, which can be difficult for aircraft in an emergency. Flying over the North Pole is more difficult and dangerous due to the lack of airports and navigational aids in the Arctic.

A lengthier flight time may also be necessary while flying over the North Pole because of things like the Earth’s magnetic field, which can interfere with navigational equipment, and the necessity of staying clear of the polar vortex, which can disrupt flight routes and generate turbulence.

In general, flying over the North Pole may seem like the most direct route, but practical considerations such as safety, navigational challenges, and flight time make it more efficient and feasible to fly over the Atlantic when traveling between India and the USA.
