The wait is finally over! In a major boost to India’s defense capabilities, General Electric (GE) has delivered the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Tejas Mk1A Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).

The first engine has successfully completed its final round of testing at GE Aerospace’s Lynn facility in Massachusetts, clearing the way for its shipment to India.

A New Chapter for the Tejas Mk1A Program

On March 25, GE Aerospace proudly handed over the first F404-IN20 engine to HAL, marking the beginning of deliveries for the 99-engine contract signed in 2021.

The F404-IN20 is specifically designed to power the lca tejas mk1a ge f404 engines, providing the highest thrust in the F404 family with enhanced performance features such as:
Higher-flow fan for improved airflow
Single-crystal turbine blades for greater durability
Advanced components tailored for the IAF’s mission needs

ge f404 india engine represents the culmination of decades of collaboration between GE Aerospace, HAL, and India’s Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). GE’s F404 engine family is among the most successful in military aviation history, powering thousands of fighter jets worldwide.

Overcoming Challenges to Restart Production

Restarting a jet engine production line after five years is no easy feat—doing it during the COVID-19 pandemic made it even tougher. GE Aerospace had to:
-Re-establish the global supply chain for critical components
-Reactivate dormant manufacturing lines
-Implement its proprietary FLIGHT DECK lean operating model to remove bottlenecks

Despite these hurdles, GE’s teams and suppliers worked relentlessly to restart production while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality. The successful delivery of the first engine proves that these efforts have paid off.

What This Means for India’s Tejas Mk1A Program

With the first F404-IN20 engine now in India, HAL is set to accelerate Tejas Mk1A assembly to meet the IAF’s urgent operational needs. The remaining 98 engines will be delivered over the next few years, ensuring the rapid deployment of advanced, locally-built fighter jets.
