Qantas Plans Big for Long-Haul Travel with New Order of 20 A321XLR
Australia’s flag carrier, Qantas, is once again making headlines in the aviation world. Known for bold investments in fleet renewal and pushing the limits of long-haul travel, the airline has announced a major expansion that will reshape its narrowbody operations.
By placing an order for 20 additional Airbus A321XLR aircraft, Qantas is not just growing its fleet but also introducing a new level of passenger comfort—including lie-flat Business Class seats on single-aisle aircraft for the very first time.
A New Chapter in Qantas’ Fleet Renewal
The fresh order expands what is already the largest fleet renewal program in the airline’s history. Out of the 20 new A321XLRs, 16 will be equipped with lie-flat Business seats and seat-back entertainment systems, making them suitable for longer transcontinental routes such as Perth to Sydney, as well as short and medium-haul international services.
Deliveries of this new configuration will begin in 2028, raising Qantas’ total A321XLR order book to 48 aircraft.
Extended Range Brings New Possibilities
The A321XLR boasts an impressive range of 8,700 km, more than 3,000 km farther than the Boeing 737s it replaces. This extended reach will open up direct flights to destinations across Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, routes that were previously not viable with older aircraft types.
First Flights Begin in 2025
Qantas’ first two A321XLRs, tailored for domestic and short-haul international flying, are set to enter service in mid-September 2025. With this, Qantas will become the first airline in the Asia-Pacific region to operate the A321XLR. The aircraft will debut on Sydney–Melbourne and Sydney–Perth routes before gradually expanding across the network. By the close of the financial year, Qantas expects to have seven of the type in service.
Jetstar Joins the Expansion
Qantas’ low-cost arm, Jetstar, will begin receiving its own A321XLRs from 2027, featuring a two-class cabin designed for international operations. This further cements the group’s strategy of deploying the aircraft across both premium and budget markets.
A Massive Investment in the Future
The Qantas Group’s firm aircraft orders now total 214 planes, with 32 already delivered as of June 30. The delivery schedule includes:
- 17 new aircraft in FY25
- 20 aircraft in FY26
- 29 in FY27 (36 for Qantas, 10 for Jetstar, and 3 for Qantas Freight)
Meanwhile, the highly anticipated Project Sunrise A350-1000ULR program is moving forward, with the first aircraft set to enter Airbus’ final assembly line in October 2025 and deliveries starting from October 2026.
Boosting Customer Satisfaction and Efficiency
According to Qantas, the introduction of new aircraft is already delivering higher customer satisfaction, along with financial benefits and improved fuel efficiency. With the A321XLR order, the airline is doubling down on its vision of combining comfort, reach, and operational flexibility for the next era of aviation.
