India’s indigenous fighter jet ambitions just received a powerful thrust forward. In a major boost to the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A program, American aerospace giant GE Aerospace has committed to doubling the production of its F404-IN20 engines, ensuring a more reliable supply chain for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

This move is set to accelerate India’s defense self-reliance and bolster the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) modernization drive—especially at a time of heightened regional security challenges.

GE to Double F404 Engine Output by 2027

After a 14-month delay that disrupted HAL’s fighter jet production schedule, GE Aerospace has now assured HAL that it will increase the production rate of F404-IN20 engines from the current 12 units per year to 24 units annually by 2027. This assurance follows the delivery of the first engine after the earlier supply bottlenecks caused by the temporary closure of GE’s production line.

According to sources from idrw.org, GE has already resumed deliveries and is actively working to meet HAL’s engine requirements. This is particularly crucial as HAL has confirmed that the first Tejas Mk1A fighter jet will be ready for delivery in the next two months, marking a key milestone for the program.

Critical for India’s Tejas Program and IAF Modernization

The ramp-up in engine production is directly aligned with HAL’s goal of delivering 16–24 Tejas Mk1A jets per year. The current order includes 83 Mk1A aircraft, which HAL aims to deliver by 2029, with an additional 97 jets targeted for FY31–32. The F404 engines are essential to keeping this ambitious production timeline on track.

However, the previous delays have already taken a toll. Experts warn that if HAL’s delivery schedule slips further, the IAF’s fighter squadron strength could fall to just 27 by 2032, significantly weakening India’s aerial deterrence posture.

$716 Million Deal and Earlier Setbacks

GE’s commitment comes under the shadow of earlier criticism. In August 2021, the company signed a $716 million contract to supply engines for the Tejas Mk1A.
