COMAC Brings Three-Jet Lineup to Dubai Airshow as C919 Makes Middle East Debut
As the Dubai Airshow officially opens its gates today, the global aviation industry is buzzing with excitement.
From breathtaking flying displays to world-class static exhibits, enthusiasts and professionals have gathered from across the world to witness the latest innovations in aerospace. Among the biggest attractions this year is China’s ambitious leap into the global commercial aviation market — the COMAC C919.
China’s state-owned manufacturer COMAC (Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China) is stepping into the spotlight with its first-ever Middle East appearance, marking a major milestone in its push for international recognition.
The C919, designed to challenge the long-established Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX families, is now ready to make its presence felt on a global stage where competition is fierce and opportunities are vast.
A Powerful Statement at Dubai Airshow
The company will conduct a flying display of the C919, while also showcasing the C909 — formerly known as the ARJ21 business jet — on the static display. This is the first time three COMAC aircraft will appear together overseas, including two C919s and one C909, highlighting China’s growing confidence in its commercial aviation capabilities.
One of the C919s present belongs to China Southern Airlines, which joined China Eastern Airlines last year in operating the aircraft commercially. China Eastern was the launch operator in 2023, marking the beginning of the type’s service in China’s domestic market.
C919: China’s Answer to Airbus & Boeing
Powered by CFM LEAP-1C engines, equipped with fly-by-wire avionics, and built with advanced composite materials, the C919 promises:
- 20% better fuel efficiency
- Lower maintenance costs
- Reduced emissions
- Capacity for 158–192 passengers
With global supply chain challenges and limited production slots for the A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX through the end of the decade, the C919 is positioning itself as a cost-effective alternative for airlines — especially in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
Eyeing the Middle East & Africa for Breakthrough Orders
Although the C919 has secured strong order books within China, it still awaits a landmark international customer. Its certification with US and European regulators remains pending, which narrows its early market opportunities but elevates the importance of regions like the Middle East and Africa.
These markets are viewed as potential stepping stones for COMAC to make its first major overseas breakthrough — and Dubai Airshow provides the perfect stage to demonstrate its capability, reliability, and long-term promise.
A Strategic Move Amid Global Demand
With airlines worldwide struggling to secure delivery slots from Airbus and Boeing, COMAC is moving quickly to position the C919 as a viable third option in the single-aisle market. Its presence in Dubai reflects China’s broader strategy: to project confidence, attract foreign interest, and expand its footprint beyond Asia.
