Kempegowda International Airport (BLR Airport), located in Bengaluru, has made significant strides in India’s aviation landscape.

As the third busiest airport in the country, following Delhi and Mumbai, BLR Airport handled an impressive 40.73 million passengers in 2024, up from 37.2 million in 2023. However, its latest achievement goes beyond numbers—it’s a milestone in accessibility and inclusion.

India’s First Airport to Receive ACI Accessibility Accreditation

BLR Airport has become the first airport in India to achieve Level 1 Accreditation under the prestigious Airports Council International (ACI) Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation (AEA) Program. This groundbreaking recognition highlights the airport’s efforts to create a truly inclusive environment, ensuring seamless travel for passengers with reduced mobility and disabilities.

What is the AEA Program?

The ACI Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation Program focuses on improving accessibility at airports globally by addressing the needs of persons with disabilities (PwDs) and older travelers. It provides a structured framework for airports to:

  • Assess their facilities.
  • Implement accessibility improvements.
  • Align operations with international best practices.

With three progressive levels, the program evaluates strategies, policies, and outcomes, prioritizing a smooth travel experience for passengers, visitors, and staff alike.

BLR Airport: A Champion of Accessibility

Accessibility is woven into the fabric of BLR Airport’s operations. A dedicated committee ensures continuous enhancement of facilities and services tailored for Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM) and PwDs. Key initiatives include:

  1. Staff Training: Airport staff undergo regular training to provide empathetic and personalized support to passengers.
  2. Infrastructure Upgrades: Continuous improvements in facilities ensure a stress-free experience for all travelers.
  3. Assistive Programs: Signature initiatives like the “B-Included” program and the Assistive Device Policy focus on creating an equitable and inclusive environment.
  4. Hidden Disabilities Support: The airport introduced the Sunflower Lanyard scheme in 2022 to assist individuals with hidden disabilities.

Setting a Benchmark for Inclusive Air Travel

BLR Airport’s commitment to inclusivity extends beyond meeting standards—it proactively identifies and addresses barriers to ensure everyone enjoys a welcoming travel experience. By embedding accessibility into its infrastructure and operations, the airport is setting new benchmarks for the aviation industry.
