Air India Allows Pets to Fly In-Cabin Across 80 Domestic and International Routes
Air India now permits small dogs and cats weighing up to 10 kg to fly in-cabin with owners, making pet travel easier, safer and more comfortable.
For many travellers, pets aren’t just companions — they’re family. In a heartwarming move that puts pet parents first, Air India has rolled out a major upgrade to its pet travel policy, making air journeys far more comfortable for furry friends.
With the launch of its new ‘Paws on Board’ initiative, Air India now allows small pets to travel right inside the cabin, close to their owners.
Air India Makes Pet Travel Easier Than Ever
Air India, one of India’s leading airlines, has announced a significant enhancement to its passenger-friendly services by updating its pet policy. Under the revised rules, small dogs and cats weighing up to 10 kg — including their carrier — are now permitted to travel in the aircraft cabin along with their owners.
This new policy applies to more than 80 domestic and international routes, making air india one of the few Indian airlines to allow in-cabin pet travel on such a wide scale. The move aims to reduce stress for pets while offering greater peace of mind and comfort to pet parents.
Reduced Booking Time, Greater Convenience
As part of the ‘Paws on Board’ programme, Air India has also reduced the booking window from 72 hours to 48 hours before departure. This change provides added flexibility for travellers planning trips with their pets. As reported by Sources.
The airline stated that travelling is always better when pets are part of the journey — a sentiment many animal lovers strongly agree with.
Cabin Seating & Pet Limits
Pets travelling in-cabin will be accommodated in the economy class, specifically in aisle seats of the last row. However, to ensure safety and comfort, Air India has capped the allowance to a maximum of two in-cabin pets per flight.
Carrier Requirements You Must Know
To qualify for in-cabin travel, pet carriers must meet strict guidelines:
- Soft-sided, leak-proof and well-ventilated
- Maximum dimensions: 17 x 10 x 9 inches
Pets weighing over 10 kg and up to 32 kg must travel as checked baggage in a hard-case carrier compliant with IATA standards. Pets above 32 kg will be transported as cargo.
All bookings are subject to document verification and must be confirmed at least 48 hours before departure.
Charges for ‘Paws on Board’ Service
The pet travel service is non-refundable, with the following fees:
- In-cabin pets: ₹7,500 (domestic), $140 (short-haul international)
- Checked baggage pets: ₹16,000 (domestic), $350 (all international routes)
A Big Win for Pet Parents
With these updates, air india flight hopes to create a more welcoming, clearly defined, and pet-friendly flying experience. For travellers who believe that journeys are better shared with their four-legged family members, this policy truly delivers pawsome news.
