ANA Turns Aircraft Seat Covers into Slippers as Part of an Upcycling Initiative to Reduce Waste
Great Initiative: ANA old aircraft seat covers turns into Bags and slippers.
ANA HOLDINGS INC. today announced the release of a new product from the ANA Up-cycle Project, a creative initiative to develop upcycled products from aircraft parts and uniforms.
The limited-edition ANA house slippers were created in collaboration with the clothing company Onward Trading Co., Ltd. The two businesses joined forces as part of ANA’s Future Promiseblank and “Onward’s Re-make-up Project” to address the enormous textile disposal issue facing the apparel industry. In an effort to reduce waste, ANA Group and Onward Trading Co., Ltd. collaborated to create a desirable product from the usable pieces of seat covers that were faded, torn, or otherwise unfit for use on aircraft.
The production of ANA seat covers is strictly regulated, and they undergo regular maintenance and cleaning. The project transforms worn-out covers into cosy slippers in ANA’s emblematic dark blue colour rather than throwing them away. At a factory in Yamagata Prefecture, which manufactures the majority of Japan’s slippers, artisans meticulously handcraft each of these items one at a time. They visually inspect the seat covers that can be turned into slippers, and moulding, cutting, and sewing are all done by hand to extract the best qualities of the fabric and ensure the highest quality.
The number of discarded seat covers determines how much fabric is available for the house slippers, so the ANA Group will start by selling 50 pairs. Later on, different types of house slippers with various patterns will be developed depending on the available seat covers. “ANA’s Special House Slippers” reservation lottery sales will start today, according to ANA Group.
The ideas for the totes and slippers were first put forth by ANA employees, and more suggestions will undoubtedly be made in the future for the ANA Up-cycle Project. In order to build a society that is sustainable and friendly to the environment, ANA Group will keep working to reduce waste and make efficient use of resources.
