After China, the UK, Japan, and Italy, the United States has now stepped into the race to develop its own sixth-generation fighter jet, named the F-47.

With major global powers advancing their next-generation air combat programs, the U.S. Air Force is set to field a revolutionary new platform that will redefine air superiority.

The F-47 is expected to deliver unmatched capabilities in range, survivability, lethality, and adaptability, forming the central node of the NGAD Family of Systems. This sixth-generation jet will be the successor to the F-22 Raptor and is designed to operate seamlessly alongside unmanned aerial vehicles, integrating the latest in artificial intelligence, stealth, and sensor fusion technologies.

Boeing’s Major Victory in the NGAD Program

Boeing secures a major victory over rival Lockheed Martin as it is chosen to lead the production of the F-47, the U.S. Air Force’s next-generation fighter jet.

After years of classified development, officials have disclosed that a prototype has been secretly flying for nearly five years. The company has been awarded a $20 billion contract to develop and produce the NGAD fighter, solidifying its role in the future of air combat.

Steve Parker, Interim President and CEO of Boeing Defense, Space & Security, stated, “We recognize the importance of designing, building, and delivering a 6th-generation fighter capability for the United States Air Force. We have made the most significant investment in our defense business history to bring the most advanced and innovative NGAD aircraft to reality.”

This marks a turning point for Boeing, which has faced financial challenges in recent years, while Lockheed Martin has continued to dominate the fighter jet market with the F-35. Following the announcement, Boeing’s stock surged by 5%, while Lockheed Martin’s shares fell by 6%.

Key Features of the F-47

The F-47 is designed to be the most powerful fighter jet in the world, with the primary goal of deterring emerging threats, particularly from China. While many technical details remain classified, some of its expected features include:

  • Unmatched Speed & Power: The F-47 is rumored to surpass Mach 2, featuring an engine with more power than any jet of its kind. General Electric Aerospace’s XA102 and Pratt & Whitney’s XA103 adaptive-cycle engines are contenders to power the aircraft, offering increased fuel efficiency and thrust.
  • Stealth & Survivability: The aircraft appears to incorporate a canard configuration, foreplanes, and a dihedral wing design inspired by Boeing’s YF-118G Bird of Prey demonstrator. This unique shape could enhance maneuverability and stealth capabilities.
  • AI-Integrated Warfare: The F-47 will feature next-level sensor fusion, allowing seamless coordination with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in combat.
  • Cost Efficiency & Mass Production: The estimated cost of the F-47 is expected to be significantly lower than the F-22 Raptor, potentially falling within the price range of early F-35 models. The USAF plans to scale production to drive costs down further.

What This Means for the Future of U.S. Air Power

The USAF’s 2025 budget outlines NGAD’s core attributes, emphasizing survivability, lethality, persistence, and interoperability. With plans to field the F-47 by the early 2030s, the aircraft will likely replace the F-22, which has been in service since the early 2000s.

U.S. officials maintain that the F-47 will far outmatch anything built by rival nations. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared, “This is a historic investment in the American military. The F-47 will be the most advanced, most capable, most lethal aircraft ever built.”

With development moving forward at a rapid pace, the United States is preparing to set a new global benchmark for air superiority, ensuring its dominance in the evolving landscape of modern aerial warfare.
