American Airlines Announces Agreement to Purchase Boom Supersonic Overture Aircraft, Places Deposit on 20 Overtures
American, the world’s largest airline, poised to have the world’s largest supersonic fleet with new Boom Supersonic aircraft.
DENVER and FORT WORTH, Texas, August 16, 2022 — The purchase of up to 20 Overture aircraft by American Airlines, with an option to buy an additional 40, was announced today by Boom Supersonic. On the initial 20 aircraft, American has made a non-refundable deposit. It is anticipated that Overture will go twice as fast as the current fastest commercial aircraft.
Boom Supersonics’ Overture would introduce an important new speed advantage to America’s fleet, which is currently the simplest, youngest, and most efficient among U.S. network carriers. Under the terms of the agreement, Boom must meet industry-standard operating, performance, and safety requirements as well as American’s other customary conditions before delivery of any Overtures.
“Looking to the future, supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to deliver for our customers,” said Derek Kerr, American’s Chief Financial Officer. “We are excited about how Boom will shape the future of travel both for our company and our customers.”
Overture is being designed to carry 65 to 80 passengers at Mach 1.7 over water — or twice the speed of today’s fastest commercial aircraft — with a range of 4,250 nautical miles. Optimized for speed, safety and sustainability, Overture is also being designed to fly more than 600 routes around the world in as little as half the time. Flying from Miami to London in just under five hours and Los Angeles to Honolulu in three hours are among the many possibilities.
In July, Boom revealed the final production design of Overture, which is slated to roll out in 2025 and carry its first passengers by 2029.

Airbus Plans Cockpit Toilet to Make Single-Pilot Operations a Reality

This proposal is part of the ongoing effort to implement Extended Minimum Crew Operations (eMCO), a concept that could revolutionize the aviation industry by reducing the number of pilots required on ultra-long-haul flights.
Air India Invests in Future Talent: 50,000 Staff to Be Trained at New Facility
Currently, on long flights, two pilots stay in the cockpit while the others rest in a separate compartment. However, under eMCO, one pilot could be alone in the cockpit for up to three hours while the other sleeps. The goal is to reduce crew costs and improve airline efficiency, as fewer pilots would be needed for these flights.
But this proposal has raised concerns from pilot unions, who worry about safety and the challenges of single-pilot operations. To address the issue of bathroom breaks, Airbus suggests installing a radio-equipped toilet in the cockpit, allowing the pilot to use it without leaving their seat.

If the pilot needs to use the toilet, the second pilot would have to be woken up, terminating the eMCO process temporarily.
If successful, Airbus plans to begin testing this system on its A350 aircraft as soon as 2027, with single-pilot operations possibly being introduced on freighter Airbus A320s within the next five years.
