Airbus A330 MRTT: Delivering Unmatched Versatility and Capability to the Air Force
Getafe, Spain — Airbus proudly announces the continued success of its A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) program, highlighted by the latest delivery to the Spanish Air Force’s 45th Group. The A330 MRTT has proven to be the most advanced and versatile aerial refueling aircraft in operation today, combining state-of-the-art technology, high efficiency, and multi-role flexibility.
The conversion process of a standard Airbus A330 commercial aircraft into an MRTT configuration is completed in approximately 12 months at Airbus’s Getafe facilities. This transformation involves the removal of all civilian equipment and the integration of cutting-edge military systems, followed by rigorous testing, certification, and final delivery to the end customer.
The A330 MRTT features two underwing refueling stations equipped with advanced hose and drogue systems capable of transferring fuel at a rate of 13 kilograms per minute. The aircraft is capable of refueling up to 25 different types of combat aircraft under both day and night conditions, providing vital support during multi-platform missions. During aerial refueling operations, the pods remain extended in a holding pattern, ready for approaching fighter aircraft to receive fuel mid-flight.
Among the most sophisticated onboard systems is the camera-based refueling vision system, which includes three camera sets located at the rear of the aircraft. These systems enable real-time monitoring and projection of refueling operations onto cockpit displays, ensuring precision and safety even in low visibility or complex flight environments.
In addition to its refueling role, the A330 MRTT retains full passenger and cargo transport capabilities. It can carry up to 300 passengers or 37 tonnes of payload, with an operational range of approximately 16,000 kilometers. A new cabin configuration includes seating for 100 passengers and eight medicalized units to support medical evacuation missions. A dedicated mission preparation area has also been integrated at the front of the cabin, allowing military personnel to conduct briefings and planning en route.
The aircraft is based on the proven Airbus A330 platform—a twin-aisle, long-range airliner with a 70-meter wingspan and fuel capacity of approximately 100,000 liters. Currently, 15 nations operate the A330 MRTT, with a collective total of over 300,000 flight hours, further validating its reliability and mission success rate.
The flight deck has been enhanced with tactical communication systems and high-resolution displays that provide continuous situational awareness to the crew. The mission operator station allows for real-time monitoring and communication with both cockpit personnel and receiving aircraft. Operators manage refueling operations, coordinate tactical communications, and maintain situational awareness through integrated display consoles.
The A330 MRTT stands out as a truly multi-role platform—combining strategic transport, medical evacuation, and aerial refueling in a single aircraft. With a 37-tonne payload capacity and 16,000 km range, it remains a critical asset for global air mobility and force projection.
Airbus is honored to support the mission of the Spanish Air Force by delivering this latest A330 MRTT to the 45th Group, reinforcing its role as a global leader in military aerial refueling solutions.
