Odell Beckham Jr., a prominent football player, was escorted off an American Airlines flight in Florida by police on Sunday morning after crew members tried to wake him up before takeoff but became worried since he “looked to be coming in and out of consciousness,” according to officials.

At around 9:30 a.m., Miami-Dade police were called to American Airlines Flight 1228 in Miami, heading for Los Angeles, when journey attendants requested assistance out of concern that Beckham was ill and “his health might worsen through the anticipated 5-hour flight,” according to police.

The flight crew repeatedly requested Mr. Beckham to evacuate the plane when the policemen arrived, but he refused, according to the police. The cops instructed Mr. Beckham to evacuate the airplane when it was time to deplane, and he did so without incident.

Beckham tweeted early on Sunday: “What just happened to me is something I’ve never experienced in my life. I’ve seen it all.”

In a statement, American Airlines said the Los Angeles-bound aircraft “returned to the gate prior to takeoff owing to a passenger failing to comply with crew member instructions and refusing to fasten their seatbelt.” The aircraft eventually took off at 10:54 a.m.
